What Kurrent actually is
Kurrent (also called old German cursive or the German hand) is the everyday handwriting used across the German-speaking world from roughly the 16th century until the mid-20th century. It is what your German ancestors used for letters, diaries, business ledgers and signatures – and what parish priests and clerks used for baptism, marriage and death records.
You may also have heard the name Sütterlin. That's not a different script – it's the simplified school version of Kurrent, taught in German schools from 1915. Both belong to the same family of old German handwriting, and Readoldletters reads all of it.

Around 1941 the German-speaking world switched from Kurrent to the modern Latin handwriting still used today. The changeover was fast – and it means that anyone who didn't learn the old script in school simply cannot read it. It isn't “messy old cursive”; the letters have genuinely different shapes:
- An e can look like an n, and an n like a u.
- Several letters (m, n, u, e) share almost identical zig-zag strokes.
- There are two different forms of the letter s, including the tall “long s”.
- Add faded ink, abbreviations and words that are no longer in use.

What is Kurrent script?
Kurrent is the old German cursive handwriting used from roughly the 16th century until the mid-20th century. Its letterforms are so different from modern writing that most people – even native German speakers – cannot read it today. Sütterlin is its best-known school form, taught from 1915.
Why can't people read Kurrent anymore?
German switched from Kurrent to modern Latin handwriting around 1941.
